Why We Record a 30-Second Founder Video for Every Trade Client

A grainy 30 seconds of the actual founder on camera outconverts a polished agency animation every single time.

Transforming how businesses generate revenue from their online presence for the last 15 years.

One paragraph buried halfway down every Built Local site does more for conversion than the next ten paragraphs combined: a 30-second video of the actual founder, on camera, explaining what the business does and why they care.

We've shot this video for around 40 clients over the last 18 months. Two refused. Their sites convert 25-30% worse than the cohort who said yes - on identical traffic, identical layout, identical everything else. This is the long version of why we keep insisting.

The shooting rig (deliberately unfussy)

We don't bring a film crew. We bring:

  • iPhone 15, locked at 4K 30fps, gridlines on.
  • A £14 lavalier mic plugged into the phone (USB-C).
  • A small LED panel - or, if it's daytime, a window to the side of the founder.
  • A clean wall, the van, or the workshop bench as background. Never a chroma key, never a stock office.

Total kit cost under £200. We turn up, shoot for 90 minutes (most of which is the founder warming up), and leave with 4-6 usable takes. The roughness is the point - it looks unmistakably like the actual person, not a marketing team.

The script template

We don't write a script. We do prompt the founder with five questions, on camera, and edit the best 30 seconds out of the answers:

  1. What's your name and what do you do?
  2. What's the most common job you turn up to?
  3. What's the one thing you do differently from the other lot?
  4. What's the worst-case scenario someone might be ringing you about?
  5. If they ring you tomorrow, what happens next?

The answers are always better than anything we could have written. The script is in the founder's own vocabulary, which then bleeds into the rest of the site copy too. This is why every site we build at Built Local sounds different from every other site we build - we're transcribing the founder, not templating them.

The retention curve

We instrument every video with Plausible's media-events plugin. The pattern is consistent across trades:

  • 0-3s: 95% retention. The face appears. Brain decides "this is a real person".
  • 3-15s: 70% retention. The founder explains the trade. Brain decides "yes, this is the right person".
  • 15-30s: 45% retention. Brain has decided. The remainder are skimming for "what happens next".
  • Past 30s: retention falls off a cliff. Hence the 30-second cap.

Compare to the typical agency animation explainer we replace: 12% retention past 5 seconds. People can smell the budget.

What happened to the two who refused

Both are trades you'd recognise from Newcastle and Manchester. Both got identical sites otherwise. After six months, both sat roughly 25-30% behind comparable cohort sites on form-fill rate and tap-to-call rate. One has since agreed to film a video. The other still hasn't. His site still underperforms. We've stopped trying to persuade.

The technical wiring

The video is two files: an MP4 (H.264) for Safari and a WebM (VP9) for everyone else. Total payload around 4MB for a 30-second clip at 720p. We serve it from Cloudflare with a static JPEG poster image so the first paint isn't blocked. On mobile it's click-to-play with the poster showing; on desktop it's muted autoplay with captions, never with audio.

We do not use YouTube embeds. The cookie consent banner makes the page legally messy under UK GDPR, the embed adds 600KB of JavaScript, and the "Recommended next videos" thumbnails at the end of playback have, on at least one occasion, recommended a direct competitor.

Why this matters for UK local web design

The single hardest thing for a local trade to communicate online is "I am a real, accountable human being". Reviews help. A real address helps. But nothing closes the loop like 30 seconds of the founder's face, voice, and verbal tic. It's the thing a national agency literally cannot fake.

If you want this baked into your site, we ship it on every £99 + £49/month plan. The shoot is included; you don't pay extra. See the pillar guide for the rest of the trust stack.
